Manatee Sanctuary Park sits along the Banana River in Cape Canaveral. It's a free public park with paved walking trails along the waterway, covered pavilions, and direct water views from several points along the path. The park is named for the manatees that use the warm waters of the Banana River as habitat.
Manatees are most reliably seen in the Banana River from November through March when they gather in the warmer protected waters. Summer sightings happen but are less predictable. The best viewing is from the water's edge on calm mornings — scan the surface for the characteristic dark shape and slow rolling motion that reveals a manatee coming up to breathe.
Even if manatees don't cooperate, the Banana River shoreline produces good wildlife viewing year-round. Dolphins work the river regularly and are often visible from the park. Wading birds — herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills — work the shallow edges. Ospreys fish overhead. On good days you can see a remarkable amount of Florida wildlife without leaving the paved path.
Free to visit. Paved trails make it accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. The cute turtle statue near the entrance is a popular photo stop for families. No facilities beyond the basics so plan accordingly. Located in the residential part of Cape Canaveral which gives it a local feel rather than a tourist attraction feel.
Manatee Sanctuary Park pairs naturally with a morning at the Canaveral Lock or a drive to Canaveral National Seashore. The whole Banana River corridor — park, lock, Merritt Island Refuge — represents a genuinely wild Florida experience within minutes of the cruise port that most visitors never see.
