What Is Canaveral National Seashore?

Canaveral National Seashore is a 57,000-acre National Park Service property that protects 24 miles of undeveloped Atlantic barrier island beach between New Smyrna Beach and Titusville. It is the longest stretch of undeveloped beach on Florida's east coast. No hotels, no condos, no strip malls — just beach, dunes, lagoon and sky.

Playalinda Beach

The southern entrance to the Seashore is Playalinda Beach, accessible from the Cocoa Beach side. This is the closest section of the national seashore to Port Canaveral and Cocoa Beach — about 45 minutes north. The beach sits within direct sight of Kennedy Space Center launch pads making it one of the most dramatic launch viewing locations accessible to the public.

Wildlife

The Seashore protects critical nesting habitat for sea turtles — loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles nest on these beaches from May through October. Shorebirds, wading birds, ospreys and eagles are common year-round. The adjacent Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge adds to the biodiversity of the corridor making the whole area one of the most significant wildlife sanctuaries on the Atlantic coast.

What to Bring

There are few facilities at most sections of the beach. Bring water, sunscreen, food, and shade. There are no lifeguards. The beach is exposed Atlantic — conditions can change quickly. This is not a managed resort beach. It is a wilderness beach and should be treated accordingly.

Why It Beats the Cocoa Beach Strip for Some Visitors

Cocoa Beach is great for people who want convenience — restaurants, shops, easy parking. The National Seashore is great for people who want to remember what Florida actually looks like before development. Both are valid. The Seashore is worth the drive at least once for anyone spending more than a day on the Space Coast.
