The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse was first lit in 1848 making it one of Florida's oldest active lighthouses. It stands 151 feet tall on the grounds of Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The lighthouse has guided mariners around the dangerous shoals of Cape Canaveral for over 175 years and continues to operate today.
In 1893 the lighthouse was moved approximately 1.5 miles inland from its original position to escape beach erosion — a remarkable engineering achievement for the era. Workers dismantled the cast iron tower in sections, moved everything piece by piece, and reassembled it at the current location. The lighthouse has stood at that site through every rocket launch in the history of the American space program.
Access requires entering Cape Canaveral Space Force Station which means advance planning. The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation offers periodic public tours that include military base access. These tours are limited, require advance registration, and sell out — check the Foundation's website for upcoming tour dates well in advance of your visit.
Most Florida lighthouses have been converted into tourist attractions with gift shops and unlimited access. The Cape Canaveral lighthouse remains on an active military installation doing its original job. The limited access preserves something genuine about it — you're visiting a working piece of American maritime and space history, not a theme park version of one.
The lighthouse stands 151 feet tall with a spiral staircase of 185 steps to the lantern room. From the top on a clear day you can see both the Atlantic Ocean and the launch pads of Kennedy Space Center simultaneously. On tour days when launches are scheduled this is an extraordinary vantage point.
