Port Canaveral has one of the most active recreational fishing charter operations on the East Coast of Florida. The Gulf Stream passes relatively close, bringing offshore species within reach. The artificial reefs south and east of the port hold year-round populations of grouper, snapper and mahi.
Head boats (shared trips) depart on a fixed schedule with 10-40 anglers sharing the boat. They are the most economical option. Private charters give you the whole boat for your group — better for families or serious anglers. Inshore trips target redfish, snook and trout in the Banana River and Indian River systems.
Offshore: mahi, wahoo, king mackerel, grouper, snapper, cobia. Inshore: redfish, snook, trout, flounder. The offshore target species change seasonally — ask operators what is running when you book.
Most charters include tackle, bait, fish cleaning and sometimes ice. Check whether a fishing license is included — it should be for offshore trips on a licensed charter vessel. Gratuity for the mate (15-20%) is standard and customary.
