Named for an Astronaut Who Surfed Here

Alan Shepard Park sits in the heart of downtown Cocoa Beach on the Atlantic Ocean. The park is named after Alan Shepard — the first American in space and the fifth person to walk on the moon — who had deep ties to Cocoa Beach during his years as an astronaut at nearby Cape Canaveral. A five-acre oceanfront park in the middle of downtown that most tourists walk right past.

Why Locals Prefer It

While tourists gravitate to the well-marked beach access points on A1A, locals often use Alan Shepard Park for the combination of beach access, parking, and proximity to downtown dining and coffee. The park has a more neighborhood feel than the commercial beach areas — you're more likely to encounter families, regular visitors, and people who actually live here than busloads of day-trippers.

Launch Viewing

Alan Shepard Park provides an excellent unobstructed view north toward Kennedy Space Center's launch pads. The beach faces east and north giving you the perfect angle on launches from Pad 39A and the other active complexes. On launch days locals gravitate here — bring a chair and stake out a spot with clear sightlines in both directions.

Downtown Access

The park is within easy walking distance of the mural walk, the downtown restaurants, and the coffee shops that make up the authentic Cocoa Beach local experience. Combining a morning at Alan Shepard Park with breakfast at a nearby spot and a walk through the murals gives you a genuinely local Cocoa Beach morning that most tourists never have.

Practical Details

Free beach access. Parking is available in the downtown area — arrive early on busy weekends. The park has basic facilities. The beach itself is the same Atlantic beach as everywhere else in Cocoa Beach — wide, clean, with good surf most of the year. The difference is the people on it.
